Nathan Chen was born on May 5th, 1999 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His parents immigrated from China and he is the youngest of five children. He first got on the ice by being a hockey goalie but he always had an eye on figure skating.
Between the ages of 11 and 12 years old, he had won national notice for figure skating and by the age of 14 he won Bronze in the World Junior Championships. In 2015, Chen made his senior level debut. In 2017, he became the first competitor in the National Championships to land five different quadruple jumps. A “quad” is a figure skating term for a skating jump with at least four revolutions.
At the 2018 Winter Olympic Game in PyeongChang, South Korea, Nathan competed with team USA but sadly he did not win Gold. However, the tables turned at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. In order to participate, Chen took a leave of absence from Yale University.
Chen helped the United States win their first record of the highest ever Olympic score in a team event of 65 points and won a silver medal. Chen broke a world record in skating. He scored 332.60 and won a Gold Medal. Will Nathan Chen skate to the top again in 2026 during the Winter Olympics in Italy? We will have to watch to find out.
