Mrs. Calvin as Zora Neale Hurston

Zora Neale Hurston was a writer who studied Literature and Anthropology at Barnard College in New York City. Ms. Calvin went to the same college as Zora Neale Hurston and received her Bachelor's Degree from Barnard College in French Literature. Hurston “wrote about her experiences being a black woman”, and “gave opinions in a time when this was uncommon”.

Mrs. Succes as Mary McLeod Bethune

Mary McLeod Bethune was an educator that Ms. Succes can relate to her “desire and passion for teaching” and the fact they are both members of Greek Sororities. To Ms. Succes, Mary McLeod Bethune was the female role model she needed.


Quote: "The true worth of a race must be measured by the character of its womanhood."


Mrs. Philistin as Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks is a name synonymous with bravery. For Mrs. Philistin, bravery does not have to be bold, it “represents who you aspire to be”. Rosa Parks is an example of this “her strength came out of her shyness” and she used that to make a difference in the world.

Mrs. Fortune as Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou was a well respected poet who came from a tough childhood. Ms. Fortune finds strength in the ways that Maya Angelou was able to overcome her difficult upbringing and was “able to find herself a way out with poetry”.

Mr. Hicks as John Lewis

Mr. Hicks believes that John Lewis was the first person to speak up when there was an injustice regarding Black people.

For Mr. Hicks, John Lewis “provided a good example to have the courage to take a stand/take action when a situation [was] not fair”

Ms. Dublin as Ruby Bridges

As an educator, Ms. Dublin sees it as her “goal to help young people”. At the age of 6, Ruby Bridges was the first African American student to integrate an elementary school in the South. She was persistent and “broke down barriers” so that students today can reap the benefits of her tenacity.

Ms. Lynch as Madam C.J. Walker

Madam C.J. Walker was a woman whose legacy is synonymous with hard work and entrepreneurship. As our MYP Career Education teacher, Ms. Lynch felt it was important to highlight Madam C.J. Walker who was recorded as the first female self-made millionaire in America. It was important to recognize. For Ms. Lynch, she is “proof that hard work pays off”.

Mr. Williams as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

For Mr. Williams it is important to acknowledge Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for “what he stood for”. He wanted to uplift his fellow frat brother the way that Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. uplifted the concepts of equity and equality. The example that he set left a legacy that is still inspiring today.

Ms. Evans as Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is a Jamaican track and field sprinter. Ms. Evans wanted to celebrate Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce because she is from her home country and she has thrived in sports. Fraser-Pryce proved that hard work and perseverance lead to success. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce defied the odds. “A person of her stature is not known to excel in her sport but she proved otherwise”.

Mrs. Cruz as Tamara Natalie

Tamara Natalie is a well known artist who rose from nothing. Ms. Cruz wanted to recognize her because she comes from her home country of Jamaica and men are often more recognized for their accomplishments.

Mr. Dennis as George Washington Carver

As a science teacher, Mr. Dennis wanted to recognize scientific accomplishments. He is inspired by George Washington Carver because he feels that he accomplished so much with limited resources.
