Interviewed by Ania V.
Q: What were you looking forward to when tryouts started for the volleyball team?
A: “I was looking forward to a lot of girls and boys that were committed to the whole process, understanding that whether you get cut or you make the team that volleyball doesn’t end, it’s all about building a family. The ones that made it just happened to have a better day than the ones that didn’t make it. I just want to let everybody know whether they that made it or not, that volleyball should be fun and something that they can do”
Q: What were you looking for when tryouts started?
A: “I was looking for which students would fit my system. If I couldn’t find any that fit the system, which students could adjust the best to build around. Is it going to be a year where it’s a potential year or is it a year where I have a lot of skill?”
Q: Do you wish there were more spots on the team?
A: “Yes, I wish I had 100 spots. I wish I didn’t have to have tryouts. I wish I could go say, “Alright everybody, congratulations, here’s a jersey, here’s a jersey, here’s a jersey.” But, we only have a basketball court outside and no gym, there’s nothing I could do but keep 12 because when boys and girls practice together, that’s already 24 and that's not enough space. This year I kept 13, to see how much space I can truly fit.”
Q: How are you feeling about the first game of volleyball?
A: “Let’s just say that I’m very glad it’s still three weeks away, because if it was tomorrow, we would be in trouble.”
Q: What advice would you give to the volleyball players?
A: “Don’t stop, continue every day. Once you commit to something, make sure you follow through with your commitment because I know that times are going to get hard, practice can be difficult and games can be stressful, but it will all pay off at the end. Especially the ones that didn’t make it, I know it can be demoralizing, and a reason to quit, and you have to find a reason to fight through it. If you got cut, that’s a motivation for you to get better for next year. If you made the team, that’s motivation for you to work hard for the ones that didn’t make the team, and I’m just hoping that volleyball can be something that you can go further with.”
Q: Do you think you made the right choice of choosing your players?
A: “You always feel like you made the right choice, but you know, you hate to see tears, you hate to see heartbreaks, you hate to see people that feel like they deserved and didn’t make it because the truth is based on your last question like how many people do I wish I could keep, I wish I could keep them all because I’m confident I could get everyone better, but I’m just hoping that the ones I did pick represent the ones that didn’t get picked.”
